The Estate Sale of David and Jane Ball

David "Dave" and Jane "Janey" Ball were an eclectic couple!

Throughout their marriage, they collected many items representing their vastly diverse interests.

When they married and moved to the Catalina house in the mid-seventies, two families of very different backgrounds came together!

Dave, originally from Ohio, had four children and many grandchildren. He attended the University of Miami-Ohio and practiced engineering for the deep space program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. At work, he built scale models of antennas to receive information from deep space... at home for fun, he built award-winning scale models of buildings from his childhood such as a train station and the shoe factory where he had his first job in the 1940s.

His expertise and love of design brought him to actively construct an elaborate model train course in the attic for many years! He also enjoyed reading - especially crime novels with his cat on his lap, watching sports, gardening, and photography

Dave’s mother, Laura, was an amazing artist in her own right… a master quilter, who also hand-crafted beautiful Victorian-style porcelain items.

Janey, originally from San Marino, attended Wellesley College and UC Berkeley. She was a former high school Spanish teacher, acclaimed painter, philanthropist, and beloved local business owner for nearly 30 years.

Her love of painting inspired her to establish Catalina Cottage, a full-service decorative painting and beading establishment. Her business began at the house with her selling decorative painted items. Her home "boutique" quickly outgrew the house and evolved into a wholesale art and supply business at an 8000-square-foot warehouse in Azusa. She held live week-long seminars with masters of painting and beading at the warehouse, which also provided retail painted goods and supplies.

Janey and Dave would enjoy hosting the guest master painters, mostly from Russia, in their home. They encouraged guests to share customs from their home country.

Janey loved all animals but especially adored cats and dogs. She enjoyed international travel, beading, painting, and she was a speed-reader! Her guilty pleasure was trashy novels (which she could read in their entirety in just a few hours). She also lived to crochet… making Afghans of every style and color.

Janey’s father, In his retirement, became an artisan also… he made jewelry, clocks and furniture, and collected coins and stamps.

In a nutshell, Dave and Janey had many interests and talents! The variety of mementos, brought together in their home, offers a glimpse of their diverse experiences and life together.
